One of the early leaders of Hip Hop was Run Dmc the most influential rap group in history. They had people buying what they were wearing and could get radio and air play that no previous rap group could get. They were the pioneers and influenced a whole generation. In the 1980’s they’re Shell toe’s and leather blazers were the must have outfit. You weren’t cool if you didn’t have a derby hat and the rope chain to complete the look. During the late 80’s early 90’s Hip Hop began to shift from its fun non-violent beginning. The group NWA were making waves with a new rebellious we don’t care attitude. They created a style of rap labeled by many as Gangster Rap. They were a group of black males who preached about the injustices they endured while growing up impoverished in southern California. They talked about shooting cops and their enemies without thought or remorse. This was unprecedented and the media attention only made their message clearer. Many imitated they’re “lifestyle” and became overnight gangsters and thugs. This new style of Hip Hop influenced a whole new era of rappers who condoned violence and disrespectful views toward women. Tupac Shakur was a different kind of rapper that had many faces. In one song he talks about treating women fair and be good fathers by staying with their baby mothers. In another song he’ll talk about shooting people and having sex with bitches. Although at times he flipped sides he was a great speaker and motivator and was able to unite a whole west coast. He literally had an army of followers who would do his every bidding. The name of his movement was “Thug Life” which he described as a way of life for the poor and forgotten. Too many he was larger than life and thought to be somewhat invincible (after surviving 9 shots to his torso in an attempted robbery.) He even shot at 2 police officers went to trial at was not convicted. The people who listened to his music felt his pain and struggles as if they were him. He encouraged many to open they're eyes to see what was happening in these neighborhoods or "ghettos" and make a change. He expressed his frustrations with society in the song "Changes". He explains that,"I don't see no changes all I see is racist faces, misplaced hate makes disgrace for races". What he is trying to say in that verse is that minorites need to stop fighting amongst themselves because they are disgracing themselves while misdirecting they're anger.
