Hi, my name is Yashan, I was born in China, but I grew up in Colombia. I have been here for three years. I am an international students. My major is Accounting. I think this is the right major for me because I had been studying medicine in colombia for two years and half and I did not really like it. Although I did not really like my career, it was very paintful for me to quit that major because I had spent a lot of time on it. I thought that studying in the United States would be the best choice for me to forget all my sadness. The reason I came here is to settle my new life.
Now, I am studying hard in order to get a degree and I really enjoy studying Accounting. I hope I can graduate as soon as possible. During those semesters, I learned how to write an essay. I think that writing an essay is not only the problems of the grammar mistakes and sentences structure, it is also important that I can express clearly my points. Besides, I have to think that the position has to be in general; then, I can write the good essay. This portfolio can show my standpoint and my improvement of writing the essay. I think you should know when you think about giving me a grade.
I want you to read and grade only one of my papers, because I think it represents my best work. I will include a description of my best paper, I think it is good because I can feel that I have improved my writing when I compared my first essay in the beginning of the class. I know that writing an essay have to express my ideas very clear and also showing my point of view. I also tried to write as simple as possible when I developped the bady paragraph.
In Class Paper Yashan This is the paper I did to show how I could perform in class, with a 90 minute time limit, it is the equivalent of the final exam. I am submitting to be graded for my final porfolio. I read the article about "Ciderella's Stepsisters" and I picked the question 2. This essay shows my standpoint about the freedom in the present society. I only criticize about the women's freedom because there is a lot of change from the past to the present. In terms of learning about writing, this paper gave me a better idea of how to stare my points. When you read the paper, I want you to remember my standpoits. I think I did a good job of that. I think I still need to work on it to make my essay stronger and let the reader easy to understand. An essay about "Ciderella's Stepsisters", that makes a larger point. I include plenty of real and significant details in my position, and try to really make readers see and understand my point of view, to agree my opinion and the point that I had.

This is some of the other work I have done, feel free to look at it, but don't consider it for my grade.
Personal narrative September 14 2004 -- This paper, I write my life experience.
My ex-boss knows that
I came to the United States in 2001. After one week, I found a job in a jewelry store, which itomit was located in Canal Street. My boss was Chinese. She needed to hire employees speaking three languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese. I thought I was very lucky because I did not really speak English onat that time and I did not have experiencce as a salesperson, but she hired me.
I started my job on July 1, Saturday. This was my first job. I was very excited working there. For the first week, my job seemed O.K, I learned how to put the jewels on the tray and learned all the names of the jewels. In addition, I also had to go with one of my co-workers to buy breakfast and lunch. Since the company had many employees working there, we always had to go to many different bakeries and restaurants to pick up the orders because they ordered their breakfasts and lunches in separatedseparate places. When we went to buy breakfast or lunch, we had to make thea note of their orders. This way, we wouldn't get confused with their orders. For the first week I did not have to worry about making the notes of the orders because someone else did it. Most meals were Chinese food. I did not know any about Chinese food because I grew up in South America and there I couldn't find the original Chinese food. it was very difficult for me to fit the environment in that time. The most difficult for me was to learn the names of the food because they were so rare which I had never heard from my parents. I remember that in the beginning, I always had to ask my co-workers to help me to select my meals for my lunch and breakfast.
One weekday of the second week of work, my boss sent me to buy something to drink at noon. She told me in Cantonese about her beverage and she repeated twice. I still did not know the name of her beverage because I did not really understand what she said. I also was afraid to ask her to repeat the name for the third time. I understood she wanted the beverage was milk with tea and wine (this was homophone in Cantonese, that meant a cup of hot tea with milk and no sugar). That was all I heard from her. I went to the bakery and buy it for her. When I went to the bakery, I felt shy to order the beverage because I was not sure about the name of the beverage. I knew that the name of the beverage did not make sense. If I did not pronounce it right, they might laugh at me. Therefore, I just ordered the cold tea with milk. When I gave the beverage to her, she was extremely angry. She growled at me for more than an hour and this made me feel very upset, scared and worried. I understood that it was my fault, but I did not deserve it, neither. I wanted to explain to her, but I couldn’t. I thought that from her experience she knew that not all her employees knew about Chinese food because they had the same background as mine. Or perhaps, I was the only one so stupid. Things like this was so simple and I couldn’t do it right.
When I got home, I thought back and forth why my boss wanted me to do her favor. She knew that I didn't know anything about the Chinese Food. I was thinking for the whole night and I got a conclusion. She forced me to do it because she wanted me to learn faster and put more attention on Chinese food and my duties. This way, I would not depend on my co-worker. I started to pay attention on all the Chinese food. I knew that there was not thing impossible. The problem was that I needed to change my attitude. I had trouble learning the name of Chinese food for half year. Even now, I am still learning it.
SOMETIME YOU JUST HAVE TO LIE
Life is always hard. Especially living in New York. the living expense is so high. As an international student, it is hard for my parents to support all my living expense. I understand them. That's why I need a part-time job to earn a little extra money. In fact, I always have to go to work. I work as a salesperson. I do not really like my job because I have to talk a lot in order to persuade the customers and my personality is pretty quiet. Moreover,it doesn’t pay me good. But, this job can help me to alleviate at least a little bit. At the same time, I am studying full time at BMCC. I attend to the college from Monday to Thursday and I work Friday, Saturday and Sunday. That means I do not have any day off during my day at the college.
I usually go to work on my schedule. It sounds good to have a stable job schedule. However, the bad thing is I can’t take a day off easily when I really need it. I know that my boss is a little strict and mean in some occasions. It is not so convenient for his employees to take one day off without telling him a week in advance. I remember, it was last semester, spring 2004. I had three exams the same day, and these exams were a surprise for me. Therefore, I need time to study. I decided to take three days off. But I did not tell my boss about my desicion. In fact, I had to make up a very good excuse for my boss. Otherwise, my boss would get mad at me or even he would fire me. Then, I told my sister to call him that I was aphonic because the fever was affecting my voice. My boss believed in me that I was sick, and he gave me three days off.
After this event, I recognize that lie is necessary in order to survive. I think that living in this society you can't be honest all the times because people like to hear compliments. I believe this will bring more people to treat you better as friend or even as employee.
Dear Professor:
Could you please read both essays because I am not sure which one I should pick. Thank you. --OK. I'll be grading the first one. The second one is too short to be acceptable for this assignment.
