Current Date/Time

Description

English 301 examines the genre of science fiction. Science fiction has often been separated from "literary" fiction. In this course we will spend some time examining the roots and origins of science fiction, and the roots and purposes of this separation. We will read works exemplifying many of science fiction's major ideas, including, but not limited to:
  • Time Travel
  • Alien Invasion/Contact
  • Biological/Genetic Manipulation
  • Cyberpunk
  • Alternative History
  • Space Opera/Future War
  • Post-Apocalypse
  • Utopia/Dystopia
Our focus throughout, in discussion and essays, will be on the ways in which science fiction authors use these ideas to explore themes which are universal in "literary" fiction and in life. We will read short stories and at least one novel, and view several films.
