Description
English 301 examines the genre of science fiction. Science fiction has often been separated from "literary" fiction. In this course we will spend some time examining the roots and origins of science fiction, and the roots and purposes of this separation. We will read works exemplifying many of science fiction's major ideas, including, but not limited to:- Time Travel
- Alien Invasion/Contact
- Biological/Genetic Manipulation
- Cyberpunk
- Alternative History
- Space Opera/Future War
- Post-Apocalypse
- Utopia/Dystopia
Prerequisites and/or Corequisites
Successful Completion (or transfer credit) of English 1 and 2.Objectives
- To make students aware of the history and diversity of science fiction
- To examine the ways in which science fiction uniquely deals with vital literary themes.
- To examine the reasons for and nature of the separation between "literary" and "popular" fiction.
- To continue development of reading and writing skills
- To improve students' skills in literary and cultural analysis.
