Assignments -> Writing Assignments -> Tips for Writing Assignments

For each module (except Module One) you will find a writing assignment here. I will develop the topics from the material in the modules, the readings/films, and the websites linked in the modules (also found in the External Links section).

Here's some general tips about the papers:

  • Papers will not be accepted after the deadline.
  • The papers should be submitted using Blackboard.  I do not want papers as email attachments.  Use the link for each assignment to submit your paper, and then use the "attach local file" option (do not paste it into the comments section).
  • The papers should be submitted in MICROSOFT WORD format.
  • The papers should be approximately three typed pages in length. By that I mean three double-spaced, normal margin, normal font size, pages.
  • In your postings on the discussion board, you may sometimes be a little careless about grammar and spelling. That's OK. In your papers, it's not OK! This is an English 3 level course. Papers with spelling or grammar errors will not receive good grades. They may not even receive passing grades.
  • That's enough negatives. What should you do? Read the questions carefully. Read all the discussion board postings. Read the stories. Think. I'm interested in your ideas, your responses to the material and ideas in the course. It's fine to be original, and it's fine to have opinions. Just be sure to refer to what you've read. Show me that you've thought about the postings of your classmates on the discussion board, and the stories in the book, and the websites linked in the module.
  • You may choose one of the questions I ask, or you may combine several, or you may use only part of one, or you may modify one. These are papers, not quizzes, so the emphasis is on thinking and writing, not just "answering the question."
  • Email me immediately if you have questions or problems. Don't wait for the last minute!
  • Good luck!
