Dear Professor Clark,
Hi, my name is Queenie. I'm from China, and I have been living here with my family for three years. As my interest, drawing and music are both my favorite. I learnt drawing when I was a child. I like drawing and listening to music because they are both good ways for me to relax and enjoy my free time. Before I came to this college, I went to an English learning center to get my GED diploma. Now, this is my third semester in BMCC, and my major is business administration.
In fact, I think it’s not easy to improve one’s language skill from a level to a higher level, especially for a foreign student. Before this class, I have spent two semesters for the ESL 094 & 095 to pass the ACT test. During that time, I have learnt some skills such as how to comprehend the requirement, organize my idea, follow the rules, and manage my time in the test. This semester, I get the new challenge at the beginning of this English class. When my professor asked me to write the first assignment, I had no idea about what I should do. I had no rule to follow any more. I don’t know what the structure was supposed to be and the standard of getting a good grade for my assignment. After learning and practices in this whole semester, I gradually understand it’s a class that teaches me how to explore my idea, build up my own writing structure, and figure out the best way of my literal expression without just following any rules. I find out that I have improved my English to a higher level because I feel much more confident about my writing than before. Also I’m happy because I ensure my progress from my professor by getting a better grade every time. Of course, I still need to work much harder in the future. But, at least, I think I have stepped a little closer to my goal after this class.
In-Class Writing - KL -- This paper is a 90 minutes in-class writing which is equivalent as the final exam. It is the summary of my comprehension after reading a given article “What’s Hip Hop?” I’m an immigrant, and I like music very much. So I think this topic is a better one from others for me to talk about because it can be related to my interest, my foreign status, and my experiences. Through this paper, I think I have given you a clear idea of my thought and situation about my culture. Also, I choose this one because it’s the last essay that I have written at the end of this semester. It is the result of my effort through this Eng101 class. So, Prof. Clark, please grade this one as my final. Thanks!
Personal Narrative #1-KL -- This paper is about the important lesson that I have learned from my experience out of my classes.
Personal Narrative #2-KL -- This is about my experience of learning swimming in my childhood. Because the lie that my mom told me, I paid for the lesson.
Note: For the personal narrative paper, I have written two different topics. But my Professor just graded the second one because he thought it was more dramatic and powerful than the other one.
Position Paper - KL -- In this paper, I take a position on a controversial issue “sentence of juvenile offenders”. I try to persuade readers and defend that we should not sentence juvenile offenders as adults.
Criticism Paper - KL -- This paper is about my opinion and comment of our famous friend “McDonald’s” Certainly, we have to look at both sides when we criticize something. So, I talk about its good and bad fairly. But basically, you will find out that I go for its positive side obviously.
